Of mice and men

Article Abstract:

Some Thaibusinessmen took individual action against the violent military crackdown on demonstrators protesting Suchinda Kraprayoon. However, the country's biggest business organizations had not much to say in the form of condemnation of the military's brutal repression of protesting Thais. The political crisis could have had less bloodshed had the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Chamberof Commerce, the Thai Bankers Association and the Board of Trade acted with as much decisiveness as the Makati Business Club showed when Philippine Pres Ferdinand Marcos was deposed in 1986.

Yen for victory: parties seek new ways to gather election funds

Article Abstract:

Most Japanese political candidates will spend about 55 million yen to finance campaigns for the Jul 1993 general elections, using a network of nominally independent groups to solicit funds and pay expenses. The Keidanren, which coordinates donations from four major business associations, has broken with tradition and will no longer give most of its donations to the Liberal Democratic Party. In another change, industry-specific associations will funnel funds to candidates that represent the interests of their industries.

Necessary caution

Article Abstract:

Japan's new coalition government has moved slowly and cautiously, saving its political capital for the effort to reform the country's electoral system. Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa has created a cabinet in delicate balance among the eight coalition parties, and has been careful not to antagonize the major bureaucracies. He has publicly aligned himself - in the short term - with his predecessor's policies. Major changes will await the electoral reforms.
