Begum Khalida Zia's five-year economic plan has met with some success in its first two years, but Bangladesh is still one of the world's poorest countries. Privatization of state assets, incentives to foreign investors and budget reductions have pleased foreign lenders.

Separatist guerrillas in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh have agreed to talk with government negotiators. These talks may end 19 years of warfare between the area's tribesmen, who are Hindu, Muslim and Christian and the Islamic government.
