Raytheon has issued a profit warning that raises questions about mergers in the industry. The defense industry has consolidated rapidly and the company's head, Daniel Burnham, argues that Raytheon sought to do too much at too rapid a pace. The company is to shed 2,380 employees, mainly from defense electronics activities, after already having shed 15,000 employees over two years. Price competition can be more intense when competitors are larger, and this is also true for the telecoms industry.
