On your mark!

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese makers of computers and motherboards welcome the advent of two new central processing units that promise increased competition and greater choice. Cyrix launched its 6X86 chip on Oct 6, 1995 and four days later, Intel cut prices for its Pentium processor 25% to $520. In Nov Intel will release its next-generation Pentium Pro, or P-6, chip. Some say the latter is merely an incremental improvement, but others think its capacity for processing 32-bit rather than 16-bit data parcels will be crucial.

The enemy within: Taiwan's computer firms fear Intel challenge

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's motherboard and computer assemblers say their chief supplier and the world's leading semiconductor maker, US-based Intel, is competing with them on their own turf. While the Taiwanese companies together will make 12 million motherboards in 1995, up 5% from 1994, Intel will make 10 million, a 30% leap. Taiwan's computer-makers want to avoid head-to-head competition with their chief supplier, but alternative chips are less in demand. Meanwhile, Intel may not want to antagonize its marketers.

Smooth mover: Intel's new chip brings high-quality video to the PC

Article Abstract:

Intel's new Pentium Processor with MMX Technology will make video smoother with the addition of 57 instructions to the Pentium's code. An extra frame between each two normal frames is added so that video is not flickery and ill-defined. MMX also includes further compression technology, which is should be welcomed by computer users wanting more data, faster, over networks and telephone lines. New software that is designed to use MMX will operate 50-60% faster.
