One world?

Article Abstract:

Globalism in not a new trend. The 50 years prior to World War I was a time of widespread international commerce, but that ended with US protectionism. The second wave of globalization began in the 1970s when currencies were allowed to float. Technology and liberal trade laws are driving the new expansion.

Economists have argued that there was global economic integration well before 1800, but a new paper by Jeffrey Williamson and Kevin O'Rourke disagrees. They argue that the trade boom after the 'age of discovery' was not caused by market integration but by supply and demand factors.
