Online cannibals

Article Abstract:

US stockbrokers have been affected by the development of online services and a major traditional broker, Merrill Lynch, plans to go online. Meanwhile, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is considering evening trading. Some Merrill brokers could move to more traditional companies. The NYSE has a traditional trading floor, and removing this could prove difficult since members own it and may not wish to lose their jobs. Members' seats could rise in value, however, if new technology helps the NYSE to continue to rank first among world stockmarkets.

A home-grown revolutionary

Article Abstract:

New York Stock Exchange chairman, Richard Grasso, is seeking to reform the exchange. He plans to turn the NYSE into a profit-making company with its own stocks which could be on offer in late 1999. Funds are needed for an electronic stock trading system and the stock flotation will help to raise these funds. Management will be able to carry out decisions with no need to obtain support from members if the NYSE is converted into a public company.
