Article Abstract:

The English educational system includes A-levels which are examinations commonly taken by 18-year-olds seeking to enter university. Critics argue that the in-depth study of some three subjects is too narrow a base, and a broader system similar to the French baccalaureat would be better. The government plans to add qualifications, while retaining A-levels, but there is no certainty that students will wish to take the new exams, or that they will be favored by universities. There is also concern that standards at A-level could be affected by the changes.

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom education secretary, David Blunkett, has proposed reforms of public education that are a start of necessary changes. There is a need for reform due to the high level of literacy problems among adults. Private companies should manage schools that are failing, and pupils should carry funding rather than schools. Opportunities for everyone would be increased if funding were made on a per capita basis. Rich people already pay for a private education or move away from failing schools, so the existing system is already divisive.
