Out of the cocoon
Article Abstract:
The Indian budget of Feb 27 1999 increased corporate and income taxes to tackle the budget deficit, while tax breaks were given for housing and mutual funds, and interest rates were reduced to help industry. Stock prices rose, and foreign investors have become more optimistic about India. The industry minister does not plan curbs on foreign investment. There are pledges to loosen controls on foreign investment, and some bills look set to become law, though foreign companies face some problems such as import duties.
