Overview and policy discussion

Article Abstract:

An overview of the Economic Commission for Europe region's economic situation, as of late 1996, is presented. The majority of eastern Europe's economies are very open and increasingly tied to the greater world economy. Following a setback in the last half of 1995, the economic outlook for North America and western Europe has begun improving. A discussion of the issue of adding the eastern European economies to the European Union is included.

The ECE economies in 1996

Article Abstract:

An analysis of economic conditions the Economic Commission for Europe countries in 1996 is presented. The cyclical setback that troubled western Europe in the last half of 1995 gave way to a moderate upturn. Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased about 0.5% in both the first and second quarters of 1996. Eastern europe's GDP growth slowed from 1995's 5.5% rate to about 3% in the first six months of 1996.

Article Abstract:

Europe's economies were doing well during the first six months of 1997. A financial and economic crisis in Thailand was felt in Europe. Industrialized nations had stock prices decrease significantly in Oct 1997. International financial markets continued to behave erratically during Nov 1997. Employment increased throughout Europe in 1997 after no changes during 1996.
