PC PRICES SHOOT UP AS MOF MULLS CHIP CLASSIFICATION
Article Abstract:
The prices of Pentium II computers have increased by Rs2,500 - 3,000 and prices of Celeron based PCs by Rs1,000 1,500. Distributors of Intel chips are already charging higher prices as a 36 percent hike in duty on Intel chips is being contemplated by the government. PC prices are expected to increase by three to five percent if the government hikes the duty on Celeron and Pentium II chips. The Ministry of Finance (MoF) is yet to decide on the customs classification of Intel microprocessors and the tariff to be charged. Other branded computers are expected to hike prices shortly. (nr)
