PRIVATE FIRMS MAY BE FREE TO LEASE INSAT TRANSPONDERS

Article Abstract:

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is likely to allow private users to directly hire Insat (Indian National Satellites) transponders. At present, only Government organisations are allowed to hire them. The satellite communication policy has an option to lease Insat transponders to private operators. The norms are to be outlined. The current capacity of 65 transponders distributed over five satellites have been fully utilised. The capacity will be enhanced with the launch of Insat-3 series. The private operators may then be allowed to hire the transponders. For the first time Isro is leasing 11 of the 17 transponders of Insat 2-E satellite to another agency Intelsat programme, which in turn will distribute to other users. (um)(psr)

CHEAPER LAUNCH SERVICES LIKELY

Article Abstract:

India is likely to provide commercial satellite launch services at 25 percent lesser cost than other global launch service providers. At present for putting one kilogram of a satellite weight into orbit, it costs $10,000 to $12,000. India can reduce this cost by 25 percent. India is making its maiden commercial launch of two low earth orbit satellites - one is 110 kg Koreasat of South Korea and the other a 40 kg Tubsat from Germany - along with Isro's remote sensing satellite IRS P-4 during mid-May. Isro is currently working on the Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle that can launch heavy weight, multi-purpose satellites into high earth orbits. (um)(psr)
