Article Abstract:

The U.K. has patents handling construction, but there appears to be not much enforcement involved. Architectural designs could be safeguarded by patents, but various aspects of architecture may not be subject to patents. The chief ways buildings can be safeguarded from copying are discussed.

A CPD talk at the Inner Temple entitled 'The Conduct of a Public Inquiry', focused on the legal and practical problems encountered in conducting an inquiry. The insight was given into the workings behind the facade of the most public of public events, which is valuable.

Arbitrators in construction disputes must provide reasons for their awards under the Arbitration Act 1996. Having gone to the trouble and expense of arbitration, the parties usually want to know why they have won or more importantly lost.
