There is growing popular anger in Argentina over the country's economic crisis. Dec 13, 2001, saw a one-day general strike, while there has been isolated incidents of looting of supermarkets. The government is seeking to win Congress's approval for a tough budget.

Argentina has emerged from twenty years of recession and hyperinflation by adoption of dramatic free-market policies. Now Brazil is looking help its economy in the same way. Both countries are faced with huge foreign debt that they must get under control.
