Paul Zoll
Article Abstract:
Paul Zoll undertook pioneering work on the development of heart pacemakers. He studied medicine at Harvard in the 1930s, and first became interested in electrical stimulation of the heart when working as an army doctor during the second world war. The pacemakers he developed in the 1950s were external machines to which patients were attached. He also developed heart monitors which played a role in allowing reliable heart surgery and heart transplants. He received the Albert Lasker award for medical research in 1973.
