The wholesale corruption in Italian politics will not disappear quickly if officials are simply replaced, since traditional parties are very well established. The parliament is trying to delay elections and focus on economic issues, to assuage voter discontent.

Italy has functioned fairly well over the years despite a wildly unstable system of government, mostly because of the common cause against fascism and communism. This cause has collapsed, and Italy needs widespread political reform to reassert itself.
