Pig offal ban after 17 fall ill
Article Abstract:
Sale of pig organs will be banned on 5 May 1998 as 17 people fell sick after eating the offal taken from pigs imported from China which were contaminated with a banned asthma drug. The victims shared symptoms possibly related to the banned Clenbuterol, including palpitations, headaches, hand tremors and dizziness. The mainland farmers fed the drug to their live-stock to reduce body fat for better marketing. However, this is also against the law in China. While the ban of pig organs took effect immediately, the Hong Kong government was considering a quick test method from Britain at public livestock abattoir for Clenbuterol. *
