Malaysia takes action to restrict property-sector lending

Article Abstract:

Malaysia has restricted its banks from lending to construction of properties that are worth more than 250,000 ringgit. However, the lending restriction does not apply to developers who have started projects or obtained property loans that have already been approved. The new regulations partially contradict Prime Minister Mahathir Mohmad's initiatives of enhancing the country's economy by encouraging lending. The restrictions are expected to affect the country's real estate, construction and building materials industries.
