Playing safe in schools: it is possible to design safer schools that are still pleasant, inspiring places in which to work, learn and play

Article Abstract:

There is a growing need for better security in schools as they are increasingly becoming open targets for arsonists, thieves, abductors and burglars. Documents aimed at improving security in schools will be available to teachers and governors, as well as architects to take into account the design issue. Design is important, as schools should not be turned into Colditz-style fortresses. Two recent new-build schemes emphasise the problems facing architects and their clients.

Wide-ranging bill proposes to simplify regulations

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Deregulation Bill will affect the construction industry and the way in which architects work. The bill recommends modification of 32 local Acts of Parliament on local authority building control, and simplification of employment within design and building firms. It also recommends that the Department of the Environment should control all regulations, and that an energy policy for buildings should be developed.

Planning for success

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Patel Taylor aims to produce schemes which integrate with their surroundings but which are still modern and have their own expression, according to founders Pankaj Patel and Andrew Taylor. They believe that it is vital to take the best elements of existing buildings and to work with them, rather than against them. They derive considerable inspiration from the architect/planners of the 1950s.
