Sir Michael Bishop's British Midland Airways pioneered airline deregulation in the UK and Europe, beginning by challenging British Airways' route monopolies in 1980. He is now campaigning against under-utilization of Europe's airports due to preferential treatment for state-owned carriers.

Ground control: it has made a good start, but the European Commission could do more to cut the price of air travel

Article Abstract:

European airfares are high due to the lack of competition in the industry on similar routes. The EC could stop this by bringing to justice airlines that are protected by their countries' airports and forcing them to open up new landing slots and increase competition.

The UK government has at last approved a fifth terminal for Heathrow Airport, London, but no firm decision has been made on a third runway or the issue of night flights. The conditions for Terminal Five include tighter noise level controls.
