Popularity should be a separate issue from excellence of design

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the choice of seven buildings which have been included on the shortlist for the Stirling Prize 2001. The importance of selecting buildings on architectural merit rather than popularity with visitors is discussed.

Magna's legacy: all change on the Stirling front?

Article Abstract:

Wilkinson Eyre won a Stirling Prize in architecture for its Magna project, yet this project was not necessarily most deserving. A policy that sees the previous year's winner becoming a member of the jury to decide the winner helped identify Magna as a winner. Different agendas are involved with new jury members.

Stirling 2001

Article Abstract:

The Eden Project has been awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for 2001. The prize has brought popularity to architecture. Some see a bias against office buildings and past prizes have gone to buildings known and loved by the public.
