Powell promises support

Article Abstract:

Colin Powell, U.S. Secretary of State, offered strong support on his visit to Japan for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Powell said the U.S. would reduce the presence of troops in Okinawa, assist Koizumi in efforts to revitalize Japan's economy, and help clean up the banking sector. Powell supported Koizumi's challenge in rekindling the economy, and was eager to show Japan that the U.S. considers them first in priority.

Powell's appraisal is upbeat

Article Abstract:

Colin Powell, U.S. Secretary of State, reported that U.S. and Chinese relations are improving, and the U.S. scholars who are currently being held in China will have their situation resolved soon. Mr. Powell's optimistic assessment of U.S. and China relations and the Bush administration's intention to improve ties with the two countries are signs of progress.
