Prinzhorn: Nach Polen die Ukraine im Visier
Article Abstract:
After buying a site for a new corrugated-board factory in Poland, the Austrian industrialist Thomas Prinzhorn is now eyeing Ukraine. Like in Romania and Poland, a factory is to be built in Ukraine for about Sch 150mn. Prinzhorn sees east Europe as the future growth engine which is also to secure the existence of Austrian factories. Prinzhorn's paper group comprises the subsidiaries Hamburger, Mosburger, Brigl & Bergmeister, Dunapack and Rieger as well as three east European subsidiaries. In 1998, the factories in Slovenia, Hungary and Romania are to account for 40% of the group's turnover of Sch 6.5bn and pre-tax profits of Sch 500mn. In five years, the share could be 70% of Sch 10bn turnover. At present, 1,500 of the group's 3,600 employees are working in Austria. In 1998, the group is to invest Sch 500mn, one half of that in the home country. Prinzhorn is considering to sell his stake in the plastic film producer Hamburger Unterland, which does not belong to the group's core activities.

AUSTRIA: VIENNATONE TO MOVE PRODUCTION TO CHINA
Article Abstract:
Austria's leading hearing aid manufacturer Viennatone GmbH Hearing Technologie, which became part of GN Resound of Denmark in July 1999, is to close a major part of production in Grafenschachen in mid-2000. The decision involves the loss of about 100 jobs. Cost-intensive production will be moved to China, where labour costs are only one-twelfth of those in Austria. Viennatone is the world's fourth-biggest hearing aid manufacturer, with a market share of 14%. Siemens is the leading producer with a share of 19%, Starkey of the US 18% and Danish Oticon/Bernafon 15%. Viennatone has so far concentrated on analogue hearing aids. The new managing director Heinz Ruch says that the company has neglected investment in new products. He sees potential in digital hearing aids. Viennatone, which has made losses of about Sch 100mn in the last three years, expects a turnover of just under Sch 300mn in 1999. Mr Ruch expects double-digit growth rates in the following years.
