Product review
Article Abstract:
There is little innovation in the UK door and shutter industry but products are being refined to improve fire safety and security and make access easier for disabled people. Installation is facilitated by the availability of ready finished door sets which also improve performance in fire resistance. The standards relating to doors are concerned mainly with fire resistance and lack information on the details of components. New products for domestic use incorporate security and thermal insulation. Security is also important for manufacturers of commercial internal doors together with sound insulation and fire safety.

Article Abstract:
There are many new roofing systems and materials available and there is increased interest by designers in different roof shapes. Curved and wave form roofs can now be clad with purpose made ceramic units, and standing-seam roofs in aluminium and steel have progressed from their early uses in industrial buildings. A new information sheet has been produced to help overcome the problems of refurbishing flat roofing, and liquid roofing can even be applied to old flat roofs. There is little interest in using the roof as outside space in Britain, but the technology is readily available

Article Abstract:
The modern specifications for doors and shutters have evolved from those previously specified to take account of ease of use for disabled people, improved security and increased heat-retention qualities. New UK building regulations that come into force in 1995 will change the specifications of external doors. However, the program to harmonise European standards is static, with little agreement between member nations on testing methods and performance requirements. An overview of developments in the doors and shutters industry is presented.
