Product review: the new water regulations due to come into force next year will have an impact on plumbing installations and fittings, as will the water conservation measures likely to be encouraged by the government as part of its Earth Summit commitment

Article Abstract:

The Water Regulations Advisory Committee (WRAC) will make recommendations for water conservation as part of the new Water Regulations scheduled to replace the existing Water Byelaws. It will advise on technical requirements for plumbing installations and fittings, and the recommendations are expected to include the reduction of the standard WC flush and the use of recycled 'grey' water. PVC-u drainage products have transformed rainwater, waste water and mains water collection and distribution, but Greenpeace has pointed to environmental problems from the manufacture, use and disposal of PVC-u products. However the British Plastics Federation has responded in a booklet, claiming that PVC-u is a safe building material.
