Prospects appear dim for giants in electronics sector

Article Abstract:

Japan's electrical equipment and supplies industry seems to be on the verge of collapse, as some of its most prominent companies recorded massive financial loses in 1997. Toshiba Corp, in particular, expects its pretax profits to decline by a massive 92%, which corresponds to losses amounting to %78.8 million. Mitsubishi Electric Corp, likewise anticipates to incur losses ranging from 40 billion yen to 50 billion yen. Sources revealed that slump earnings were caused by the regional currency crisis and low demand for consumer products, including air conditioners and home appliances.

Yen's surge may create serious problems for economy

Article Abstract:

Economic and financial experts in Japan have expressed concern over the sudden increase of the yen's value, claiming that it may pose serious economic consequences. It is believed that the nine point increase in the Japanese yen during the second week of Oct, 1998 would not only expand the country's trade surplus, but render locally-manufactured products expensive, as well. Other market analysts believe that a stronger yen would trigger a sudden rise in unemployment rate while intensifying deflationary pressures.

Japan's economic slump qualifies as a recession by Western standards

Article Abstract:

Many economic analysts believe that Japan's successive economic downturns during the 2nd and 3rd qtrs. 1996 can be characterized as an economic recession by Western standards. However, they are divided regarding Japan's prospects for growth. Some analysts predict that the country will continue to grow in 1997 but at a slower rate. Other analysts believe that the Japanese economy may experience a full-blown recession as consumer spending declines because of higher taxes.
