Protests don't help Indonesia's ethnic Chinese
Article Abstract:
International outrage over the ill treatment of Indonesia's ethnic Chinese in the Jakarta riots should be placed in perspective so as not to condemn the entire native Indonesian population. Some misguided Indonesians were of the false impression that ethnic Chinese controlled a significant portion of the economy and was responsible for its collapse. But the misfortune of the ethic Chinese also showed the caring nature of some native Indonesians, shielding many ethnic Chinese from the riots.

Being 'Chinese'
Article Abstract:
The early resolution of Hong Kong's 'ethnic identity' will determine its dealings with China after the handover. Hong Kong's provisional government has shown early signs of leaning towards a narrow definition of the 'Chinese' identity it seeks to foster in Hong Kong's population, that of subservience to the control of the government. Hong Kong's survival depends on its definition of the Chinese ethnic identity as something with a cosmopolitan nature.
