Punch up for Allied in pub brawl
Article Abstract:
There is still fierce competition between Whitbread and Punch Taverns to purchase Allied Domecq's pub division. Whitbread initially announced that it would purchase the business for 2.36 billion pounds sterling in an all paper deal, but the use by Punch of a number of clever techniques, including the involvement of brewer Bass, has eroded Whitbread's bid to 2.2 billion pounds sterling, more than 500 million pounds sterling less than Punch's tax-free offer.

Pulling the pints
Article Abstract:
Honeycombe Leisure is a UK pub company which has invested in expansion. The company decided on a mix of sources such as venture capital, brewer loans and bank loans. The company decided to buy freehold pubs and could have borrowed all the funds needed from a brewery. This would have prevented Honeycombe from negotiating discounts from other brewers. The company negotiated with BZW, and Barclays Bank was also involved in its funding for expansion.

Swallow pride dented by 'corporate vandalism' slur: advisers defend strategy over brewery closure as pub break-up completes in acrimony
Article Abstract:
The accusation of 'corporate vandalism' levelled at Pubmaster's 128 million pounds sterling acquisition of Swallow Group's tenanted estate has been strongly denied by Swallow's advisers. The slur follows Swallow's refutation of an attempted management buyout to save breweries in Sunderland and Sheffield, which were closed in July 1999.
