Quarterly research review
Article Abstract:
Only recently has research on Third World multinational corporations begun to reveal the key features of this type of business enterprise. More than 2,000 multinational companies were based in developing countries at the end of 1983, and they have made investments of $16 billion. Third World multinationals do not compete with U.S. international business enterprises, but appeal to a different segment of the market. Other characteristics of Third World multinationals are that they are generally smaller than most international businesses, operate in fewer foreign countries, produce fewer brand name items, participate in much less research and development, and tend to organize themselves as joint ventures, rather than having foreign affiliates.

Quarterly research review
Article Abstract:
Multinational corporations (MNCs) have been the subject of many management research projects since 1960, when the pioneer work of Hymer was presented at MIT. The latest theories give the MNC a leading role in the incorporation of less developed countries in the world economy. In Latin America it is a point of contention whether the MNCs' role is beneficial or counterproductive to the economic development of those countries. From a different perspective, it is also argued that MNCs are not the cause of uneven development but just one factor in the history of cities and their interaction with rural areas.
