ROUND THE MULBERRY BUSH - MULBERRY SILK EXPORTS
Article Abstract:
The government of India has allowed free imports of mulberry raw silk. This is likely to increase the exports of silk goods. Central Silk Board (CSB) states that the mulberry silk production is 13,000 tonnes and domestic silk demand is 20,000 tonnes. About 3,500-4,000 tonnes of mulberry raw silk is imported and the shortage is met through smuggled raw silk. In 1995, India was the fourth largest exporter of silk fabrics in the world. Its exports accounted for 6.5 percent of the total value in 1995 at $126 million. Silk exports increased to Rs856.36 crore in 1997-98 from Rs834.72 crore in 1996-97. The western markets like European countries and US accounted for 60 percent of the exports. (rk)
