In 1997-98, Rhone-Poulenc India (RPI) recorded a 36 percent drop in net profit and 13 percent increase in sales. RPI was adversely affected by intense competition for two of its major pharma brands, Phensedyl and Stematil. HMR REGISTERS 53% RISE IN NET

Hoechst Marion Roussel (HMR), a pharmaceuticals producer, made a net profit of Rs31.03 crore during 1997-98 (Rs20.26 crore in 1996-97). Its exports were Rs115 crore. It earned Rs10.74 crore from sale of fixed assets and development rights. The performance of HMR was affected by the ban on Baralgan. Between January-April 1998, HMR introduced four medicines. Wockhardt Ltd has achieved a sales turnover of Rs152.30 crore ($35.7 million) in the first quarter of current financial year, the three months ending September 30, 1998. This is an increase of 32 percent over Rs115.6 crore ($31.9 million) recorded in the first three months of 1997-98. In the first quarter, Workhardt launched three new specialised medical nutrition products for diabetes, renal failure, cancer, burns, trauma and TB. (uh)
