Article Abstract:
The Reserve Bank of India states that the gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of Indian Banks account for 17.8 percent of total loans. Standard & Poor's, an international credit rating agency, says that Indian banking systems are in the high-risk league. It is estimated that the NPAs of public sector banks is Rs44,000 crore. Out of this, eight chronically sick banks account for 31.8 percent at Rs14,000 crore while the remaining 68 percent is shared by 19 banks. (khr)
