Transport and the environment

Article Abstract:

By 1991 there were more than 24 million licenced vehicles on the UK's roads. This had led to an increase in pollutants such as carbon dioxide and lead. Methods to reduce this pollution take two forms, either making vehicles cleaner or reducing traffic. Catalytic converters and government controls on emissions are used for the first formula. Taxing road use and fuel could cut car use, as could limiting access to cities and reducing the speed limit.
