People power, 1986-1996
Article Abstract:
The Philippine government still maintains the bad ideas President Marcos laid down regarding the state's role in the economy, leading to the impoverishment of the people and their democracy. Big government has failed to secure basic rights and denies people the opportunity to help themselves, hobbling an economy that should be soaring on the strength of natural resources and a skilled, educated workforce. Ironically, the government refuses to see its own role in the debacle, blaming it instead on overpopulation.

Blow by blow
Article Abstract:
Live TV coverage of a social uprising debuted in the Philippines in 1986 and quickly became a powerful force. The author's telephone coverage of events in Manila is described, including the struggle to get an international circuit. With that as a trial run, CNN and other networks were better able to cover the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre in 1989, where foreign cameras were allowed because Beijing anticipated favorable coverage of a meeting between Chinese and Russian leaders.
