Reassessment at Paternoster: the Prince of Wales's intervention in the Paternoster Square competition has been partly overturned - and its final likely effects are far from clear

Article Abstract:

The seven schemes prepared for the Paternoster Square competition were said to offer ideas for the future shape of the city. However the inefficient and unsightly 1960s buildings remain, but Simpson's later alternative had a timeless look, although the Prince of Wales declined to endorse the evident traditionalism. Paternoster is being viewed in a different way today and the public should be asked to evaluate the architecture, which will be identifiable as the heir of Simpson.

Thumbs down from City for Prince's dream of Paternoster

Article Abstract:

The 800 million pounds sterling plan to redevelop Paternoster Square, next to St Paul's Cathedral in the centre of London, England, has hit a new crisis following its dismissal by the Corporation of London as unattractive. It now seems likely that the classical designs by a group of architects which includes John Simpson and Terry Farrell, which have been praised by the Prince of Wales, will now be abandoned. A more flexible design will probably be adopted.

Paternoster Square revisited

Article Abstract:

St Paul's Cathedral, London, UK has been the subject of intense argument about its setting. After the World War II the cathedral was placed in a classical setting. In 1956 the modernisation of Paternoster Square saw the cathedral in rather more picturesque settings, but this was not deemed suitable. Nicholas Hawksmoor has submitted a plan, consisting of a piazza which will combine the look and atmosphere of the area in 1940s with some formality.
