Rebels without a cause: Khmer Rouge now fighting for survival

Article Abstract:

Cambodia's Khmer Rouge insurgents are losing both prestige and access to resources both in the countryside and among former international supporters. The group now has no credible political goals and is alienating many in the countryside and among its own ranks with increasingly violent orders and a rising interest among its leaders in terrorism. However, it has proven terrifically resilient, and knowledgable sources say not to underestimate it. Some 5,000 to 6,000 troops remain, but with little ammunition.

Survival tactics: Khmer Rouge plans its post-poll strategy

Article Abstract:

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge's other leaders are trying to formulate a political strategy following the group's defeat in the May 1993 UN-sponsored election in Cambodia. The leadership hopes that the 20% of the countryside still under Khmer Rouge rule will help it win inclusion in a government of national reconciliation. However, the Khmer Rouge's many domestic and foreign opponents may use its post-election weakness to try to crush the group.

Not so secret agenda

Article Abstract:

The United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), is trying to maintain peace and order in Cambodia by involving the Khmer Rouge in the 1993 elections. UNTAC officials confirm that holding the elections without the cooperation of the Khmer Rouge would go against the conditions of the Paris agreement. UNTAC analysts accuse the UN for not sustaining the peace accord.
