Significant changes are taking place in the European and Asian telecommunications markets. The Asian market is opening up, while opportunities are arising in Europe as a result of privatization of state-owned telecommunications firms. Technology is changing rapidly, and many alliances and acquisitions are taking place. European telecommunications deal activity rose by 54% in 1999 from 1998 to 329 deals, while deal value reached $363.4 billion, from $16.3 billion. Significant developments include Vodafone's offer to demerge Orange, the third-largest mobile phone firm in the UK. A number of companies are believed to be interested in Orange.
