Red menace: warnings of a communist revival get personal

Article Abstract:

Indonesian army chief of general staff Lt-Gen Soeyono has rattled the nation's intellectuals with his Oct 17, 1995, accusations that a prominent union leader, a self-exiled academic and a renowned writer are communists. The charges are the strongest element yet in a resurgent anti-communist campaign echoing those of the 1960s, but at a time when few see communism as a threat. A variety of violent incidents and some recently published writings have disturbed authorities, however, who speak of 'formless organizations,' a term that can apply to Muslim groups. The accused are labor activist Muchtar Pakpahan, academic George Aditjondro, and author Pramoedya Anata Toer.

Cold War bogey: opposition party roiled by charges of communist links

Article Abstract:

Recent charges by disgruntled members of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) that many of its leaders have communist ties may signal a government campaign against PDI chairman Megawati Sukarnoputri. Observers are skeptical about the accusations, but PDI members say they show the government's fear of the smallest opposition party. The head of PDI's West Java party has been removed pending a government investigation. Megawati is the daughter of a former liberal head of the government, overthrown following a terrible purge in the 1960s.

Containment strategy: government bars opposition leader from key province

Article Abstract:

The barring of Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) Chairman Megawati Sukarnoputri from a regional PDI meeting is seen by some as an effort by the ruling party to make the opposition party obsolete. Megawati's presence was barred by PDI vice chairmen in East Java, Latif Pujosakti. Some feel that Latif is actually working with the interest of the ruling Golkar party in mind.
