Tiananmen Blues: Human-rights issues will weigh heavy on Clinton-Jiang summit

Article Abstract:

The events of Tiananmen Square will hang over the state visit by Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the US, with plans by human rights activists to gather in Lafayette Square. Beijing's leadership will require wide US support if it is to follow up its promises to reform state enterprises, and Jiang could make a few high profile human-rights concessions to help the cause. Other complications to the Sino-American relationship, are their economic links, and China has to undertake major restructuring of its economy if it wants to join the World Trade Organization.

Collateral damage: missile tests rally Americans against China

Article Abstract:

China's military exercises off the coast of Taiwan have rallied the US in support of the island and jeopardized the upcoming congressional vote on China's Most Favored Nation trading status. Two US aircraft carriers and their battle groups are now in the region, to discourage further escalation and reassure other Asian countries of US resolve. Domestic politics are also a factor, with President Bill Clinton apparently following Congress' pro-Taiwan lead. In all, China has badly hurt its image in Washington.
