Red tape around the world

Article Abstract:

There are indications of a new era of competition emerging between leading international law firms. The world dominance of the UK's system of common law is now being challenged by the common law system operating in New York, NY. US law firms are benefiting from the fact that US investment banks have a strong international presence in project financing. These banks often insist that deals are based on New York law. Privatization has also benefited US law firms. This is because a flotation on the New York Stock Exchange needs Securities and Exchange Commission approval, thus requiring New York legal advice.

Warren Magee

Article Abstract:

Warren Magee was a defense lawyer whose clients included Oswald Pohl, a key Nazi at the Nuremberg trials. SS officer, Otto Ohlendorf, was also a client, as was Paul Blobel, both of whom had massacred Jews. The death penalty had been abolished in West Germany, as Magee pointed out, but these men were executed. Baron Ernst von Weizacker, who was German envoy sent to the Vatican in World War Two, was another client, and was jailed for five years, a sentence later commuted. He had asked Pope Pius XII to protest against the rounding up of Jews in Rome, Italy, and he argued against this move himself.
