Reformers take control

Article Abstract:

P. Chidambaram was moved to the critical post of finance minister in the cabinet by Man Mohan Singh, which assured the investors that economic liberalization will continue. There are many challenges imposed to the new finance minister among which the first challenge is to advise the prime minister on whether to implement a long overdue but highly unpopular hike in prices of petroleum products to reflect the rising price of crude oil.

India's parliament adjourned on February 5,2004 and politicians begun their full-time campaigning for the general election in mid-April. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was very sure about its victory and were trying their best to put down the Congress party and its allies.
