Reinventing strategic management: new theory and practice for competence-based competition

Article Abstract:

Experts are developing the theory of competence-based strategic management to accommodate the new kinds of competitive environments which have arisen since the early 1980s. Traditional strategy theory was becoming increasingly outdated in the face of new forms of organization, new technologies and increasing globalization. The developing theory of competence builds new dimensions into strategy management theory, which are dynamic and involve interpretation of systems. The development of the theory would, therefore, benefit from interaction between researchers and managers.

De-contextualising competence: can business best practice be bundled and sold?

Article Abstract:

The management technique of business best practice (BBP) can become problematic for those who seek to imitate the best performers because BBP knowledge may be implicit and organisations work within different environments. Some basic assumptions in benchmarking literature may have been overlooked and practice may be enhanced if some basic challenges are considered, such as knowledge transfer barriers and organisational diversity. Future study of best practice should take into account factors such as the role of endogenous change and environmental determinants.
