Kenyan Pres Daniel arap Moi continues to silence his critics, though foreign creditors and investors have pressured him into holding free elections. Some fear elections would unleash tribal conflicts and that Moi's soldiers would stop them anyway if he was in danger of losing.

Remaking Kenya: the IMF's break with the country can only help

Article Abstract:

The IMF was correct to discontinue a $220 million loan when Kenyan Pres Daniel arap Moi refused to comply with a set of guidelines aimed at controlling political corruption. Unless Moi takes action to improve conditions, capital flight, currency devaluation and more violence are nearly certain.
