Restoring growth: the challenge is to avoid another 'bubble.' (Japanese economic growth) (Japan: Trade & Investment)

Article Abstract:

Concern for reviving economic growth may cause the Japanese government to delay carrying out a much-needed economic restructuring. Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa's Liberal Democratic government has set a goal of 3.3% growth for FY 93, and has implemented monetary and fiscal policies designed to achieve that rate. Unfortunately, many economists believe that these short-sighted policies will recreate the economic conditions of 1986-87 when too-rapid growth ended in a sudden decline marked by asset inflation.

Quantifying quality

Article Abstract:

Japan has hatched a plan to send experts from its Ministry of International Trade and Industry to Asean nations to teach quality manufacturing of exports. This move has been spurred by the growing protectionism in Europe where the EC has started forming a tight economic bloc and the need to come up with an Asian version of the EC. Furthermore, Japan seeks to cultivate closer relations with the countries composing the Asean and establish standards with international acceptability.

Down to the wire

Article Abstract:

Japanese officials and politicians appear to be anxious in rescuing the Tokyo stock market. Some suggestions are downright wasteful like making companies buy their own stocks at higher dividend payments. One suggestion that has ridiculous if not ill impications is the plan to use the postal system's life-insurance funds and other quasi-government monies to buy equities. It is suggested that the money will be better used in public works.
