A recent food and drink conference, sponsored jointly by SBC Warburg and 'Acquisitions Monthly' magazine featured a number of speeches by industry executives. Charterhouse Development Capital director Roger Pilgrim discussed management buyouts within the sector; while Peter Wallis of SRU discussed branded advertising. Other issues discussed include developments in the European food industry; the development of the 'super-pub'; and the acquisition of brewer Courage.

Benelux M&A buoyed by global consolidation
Article Abstract:
US and UK companies have been particularly active in making cross-border acquisitions in the Benelux region since early 1995. There were 26 UK acquisitions in the region worth 565 million pounds sterling in 1995, with US companies undertaking 21 deals worth 229 million pounds sterling. In the first half of 1996, UK companies were involved in 21 deals, at a value of 68 million pounds sterling, while US companies undertook 11 deals worth 271 million pounds sterling.

Post-election Spain ripe for restructuring
Article Abstract:
The Spanish election in March 1996 has given rise to an uncomfortable alliance between the three main political parties, leading to political uncertainty and instability for overseas investors. The main element expected to influence the Spanish mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market is the need for rationalization in some industries. An analysis of Spain's M&A market is presented.
