Retevision sera el tercer operador de telefonia movil

Article Abstract:

The third mobile telephone license in Spain has been awarded to Retevision. Losing out to Retevision was French operator France Telecom, the only rival for the license. Retevision's bid included a financial commitment of Pta 600,000mn, of which Pta 258,594mn was in guarantees. Retevision plans to begin offering service in the eight major cities in 1998, with a coverage of 19%. By the year 2001 coverage is expected to reach 95% of the population. By year end 1998 some 800 base stations will have to be installed. The number will increase in the following two years by 7,500. In the first three years of mobile business Retevision will have to invest 75% of the Pta 328,900mmn it will need to invest over the next ten years. The consortium will operate on the GSM 1800 frequency and has announced that it will offer services 30% cheaper than the current rates, through six different schemes.

The basic telephony operator Retevision is searching for agreements with its cable partners (those controlled by the same shareholders) in order to co-ordinate the installation of its network. Cable operators could set up the local networks in residential areas while Retevision could focus on companies offering a country wide service. Retevision would have access to local networks and cable operators to Retevision's network. Such agreements would affect the northern and southern regions of Spain. In other regions (Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Valencia, Balearic Islands, Murcia, and probably Santander) Retevision would have to include the installation of local networks or reach agreements with its competitors Cableuropa and Telefonica.

La telefonia movil generara este ano mas de 700,000 millones en Espana

According to mobile phone operators in Spain, Airtel and Telefonica Moviles, over Pta 700,000mn in revenues will be generated in 1998. Airtel is predicting a turnover of Pta 200,000mn, while Telefonica Moviles claims its revenues will exceed Pta 455,000mn. The number of subscribers at year end is expected to reach over 6.7mn. The sales forecast for terminals is around 3.8mn, a market worth around Pta 50,000mn.
