Review group urges major shake-up of education
Article Abstract:
A Royal Institute of British Architects committee chaired by Sir Colin Stansfield Smith has recommended a new model for architectural education in the UK. Under this model, the first of four layers of professional qualification would usually be obtained through a three-year course, although this stage could take four years if combined with planning or engineering or five years if the student is converting from a non-cognate discipline. The second layer would cover a year's work experience and a one-year or three-semester MA/MSc in architecture or a range of linked subjects.

Education under the microscope
Article Abstract:
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has been conscious while undertaking its wide-reaching Review of Architectural Education of the need to derive benefits from developments in other areas of education which will inevitably affect its own views. The RIBA believes that it is vital that a positive attitude is encouraged and that practical progress is made towards extending the scope of architectural education in the 21st century. It also recognizes the importance of protecting the vocational standards of those who take up a career in architecture.

Education reviewed
Article Abstract:
Architects need to be able to react continuously to changing client requirements, but they also have a duty to go beyond what is envisaged at the beginning of a project, according to Richard MacCormac, speaking at the Arup Foundation education seminar in Dec 1996. For this reason, training for architects must not be too rigid, and must be sure to produce architects who are both constructors and artists. The best architectural practices are those which combine the distinct skills of their individual architects in areas such as organisation and creativity.
