Rock solid: Asia's teens may strut their designer togs in trendy discos, but their beliefs remain staunchly conservative. If their world is so different from their parents', why are they still clinging to mom and dad's values?

Article Abstract:

Asia's teenagers have grown up knowing nothing but peace, economic growth and the ever-increasing supply of consumer goods. Their elders deride their acquisitiveness and acceptance of Western fashions and superficial consumer values. However, several surveys show that Asian teenagers place importance on traditional values such as family, jobs, and respect for elders and saving for the future. Politics and geography are factors in the way young people react to the economic expansion, but the family retains a dominant position in transmitting and sustaining traditional values and culture.

Total correction: as interest in history grows, official view is asserted

Article Abstract:

Indonesian authorities have banned former Sukarno cabinet minister Oei Tjoe Tat's new memoirs on the ground that they incite public unrest through false opinion. Apparently the 400-page book, 'Oek Tjoe Tat: Assistant to President Suharto' challenged some official accounts of the 1965-66 attempted coup in which six generals were murdered; as of Jan 1966, when govt reports said 80,000 had died, Oei's figures showed a half million dead. The govt has recently been cracking down on New Left protests seen as akin to communist.
