Pakistani hotelier and businessman Byram Avari takes bold public stances as he forges new links in his growing international empire. His father launched a chain of hotels, which Byram continues to expand, but he is also diversifying to reduce his vulnerability to business cycles. Some critics say he uses political and personal connections for gain, while other charge that his actions have divided Pakistan's small, low-profile Parsi community. His holdings include Pakistan's third and newest whisky distillery.

Good intentions: Central Asians agree to set up a bank, open roads

Article Abstract:

The 10 member nations of the Economic Coordination Organization agreed at a mid-March meeting to establish a trade and development bank and open the Karakorum Highway to major trade. The members, including Pakistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, and Tajikistan, also displayed some of the internal rifts that could keep the group from growing into a Central Asian ASEAN.
