Article Abstract:

The US has sought a new enemy following the end of communism, and the enemy has tended to be found at home rather than abroad, with the tobacco industry one candidate. The movie 'The Insider' casts the industry in the role of a villain, and there is a strong anti-smoking campaign in California. Trial lawyers, public-health officials and citizen activists have set up an alliance that can beat big business. Bullying and intolerance have come to characterize drives against smoking. Other activities are risky, such as many sports, and obesity is also a health risk with costs to others.
