Royal intervention prompted Belfast design initiative

Article Abstract:

A community planning weekend was held in Belfast, Northern Ireland,after the Prince of Wales suggested to United Kingdom Prime Minister John Major that the citycould benefit from community architecture. John Thompson of John Thompson & Partners wasappointed to run the event which was given much television and press coverage but whichreceived little public interest. Many local residents in Belfast want to revitalise the ShankhillRoad area to revive community spirit. However, some complain the community planning schemeis politically motivated.

Article Abstract:

Knowsley Design Consultancy, designers of the renovation work to Huyton town centre, Merseyside, England, used contrasting clay and concrete paving in different colours, sizes and textures to provide a colourful precinct for shoppers. The contractor, Dowhigh, took 40 weeks to complete the work often working in difficult conditions to allow shoppers continual access to the centre. The cost of the project was 1.3 million pounds sterling and it also included the installation of a new lighting system and new street furniture.

Beveridge in Belfast

Article Abstract:

Roger McMichael Architects have designed Beveridge Hall, a residential student complex at the Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Reference is made to the brickwork buildings and landscaping that give the atmosphere of a village-like community.
